Can dogs eat chicken bones?

While you shouldn’t make it a habit to feed your dog chicken bones, they can chew on one once in a while.

Raw chicken bones

Raw chicken bones are the only safe bone to give your pooch. Even then, it’s not 100% safe. Raw bones are good for your pup’s dental health, but they can still pose problems. For example, they can splinter, fracture teeth, cause constipation, or become lodged in the mouth, throat, stomach, or esophagus.

If you decide to give your pet a raw bone, be sure to take all the meat off. Otherwise, your dog may try to eat the entire bone if they can’t get the meat off themselves.

Cooked chicken bones

These are a no-no as they are typically seasoned, which is toxic to dogs. In addition, cooked bones pose the same threats as raw bones. Also, cooked chicken bones are brittle. Therefore they’re more likely to splinter as your dog chews it.

If your dog eats cooked bones, be sure to wash it, so all the seasoning comes off. Also, ensure it’s chicken wing tips or neck bone. Drumsticks and wishbones are not recommended. When your dog’s eating a chicken bone, always supervise them so accidents can be prevented or taken care of right away.

Can dogs digest chicken bones?

Bones from real meat that humans consume, such as chicken, beef, and pork, are not digestible for dogs. This is another dangerous reason why it’s best to keep bones away from your dog. If swallowed, your dog may be okay, and they’ll pass the bone. This can take up to 24 hours. After that, you can call your veterinarian to avoid any other risks and be on the safe side.

If cooked bones splinter, it may cause gastrointestinal perforation, a hole in the wall of part of the gastrointestinal tract. It affects the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and esophagus. Additionally, bone marrow is high in fat, and too much of it can cause pancreatitis.

Can your dog eat other kinds of bones? Absolutely. Bone treats that are manufactured for dogs are safe for their digestive system. They also contain nutrients catered for your dog. Eating these kinds of bones once in a while will satisfy your pup.

My dog ate a chicken bone – what do I do?

Don’t panic – while chicken bones can be dangerous, sometimes your pet will be fine. It’s important to monitor your doggo after they’ve eaten a bone. Symptoms to watch out for will be:

  • Bloody stool
  • Coughing
  • Dental tissue
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive drooling
  • Fatigue
  • Gagging
  • Inflamed or swollen stomach
  • Poor appetite
  • Trouble breathing
  • Vomiting

If you notice any of these signs, contact your dog’s veterinarian immediately. A sign that your pooch is sick should appear within ten minutes of the bone being consumed. If your dog seems okay, continue to monitor them for the next couple of days.

How to help a choking dog

If your dog is choking on a bone, you should immediately rush them to the emergency vet. However, dog owners can give their dogs CPR and first aid, similar to humans.

To begin, check the airway. You may be able to feel around the inside of their mouth to see if something is obstructing the airway. Do this carefully so you don’t accidentally push the object further back into the throat. Then, if something is stuck in their throat, you can safely do the Heimlich maneuver. Get behind your dog, wrap your arms around their chest, and bring your hands together to point below the end of the sternum.

Next, give a quick pull toward you through your pooch. Finally, continuously check to see if the stuck object made its way forward to be removed. As a dog owner, you can take animal CPR and first aid classes so you can be ready for any accidents.
