can dogs eat lemons?

We all find ourselves getting distracted by those cute animal videos on the internet. One such challenge is watching dogs react when they lick a lemon. But can dogs eat lemons? The short answer is no. While one or two licks won’t necessarily hurt your dog, lemons are a citrus fruit that they should stay away from.

In addition, lemons have few health benefits for dogs. So, even if they were able to eat this fruit, it wouldn’t be worth it. Let’s dive deeper into why dogs shouldn’t have lemons.

What happens if dogs eat lemons?

Technically, dogs will be able to eat the flesh of lemons. However, their digestive system won’t be able to handle large quantities. This could cause your pup to get sick with an upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhea. Your pup may also have a sensitivity to light, excessively drooling, panting, lack of focus, lack of appetite, muscle tremors, and a few other symptoms.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog and suspect they might have eaten a lemon or two, then you need to call the emergency veterinarian immediately.

Luckily, dogs aren’t attracted to lemons as they are to other human foods. Lemons have an acquired taste. They’re bitter and sour, which are two flavors pups normally dislike. One sniff of a lemon, and they may turn their noses. If they get curious enough and lick the lemon once or twice, that would be fine. A lick won’t be enough to make them sick, and chances are, they’ll turn their nose away the moment after they taste the acidity.

How are lemons bad for dogs?

Lemons contain psoralen compounds and aromatic oils. These can make your dog sick, including vomiting, diarrhea, and light sensitivity. The psoralen is found throughout the lemon, most notably in the skin, seeds, and pith.

Of course, if your dog happens to have a lick of a lemon, they’ll be eating the flesh. Ingesting the skin, seeds, or pith will have even more consequences, such as creating a blockage and having gastrointestinal upset. This is why your dog should stay completely away from lemons. In addition, the citric acid lemons carry can be enough to cause a stomach upset for your pooch.

Can dogs have other lemon-flavored food items?

The quick answer is no. If dogs shouldn’t eat regular lemons, then chances are they won’t be able to eat other food that has lemons in them. This is because they will typically have other ingredients that aren’t safe for your dog to consume. Plus, your dog may not want the tangy and sour taste of the food, anyway.

Can dogs have lemon juice?

Lemon juice is definitely one to stay away from. The acidity in the lemon juice will harm your dog’s digestive system. Lemon juice also typically has added sugar that isn’t good for your dog, either.

Can dogs have lemonade?

While the citric acid from the lemons gets diluted from the water in lemonade, this drink often has added sugar or other flavors if you get creative enough. Lemonade is tangy, so it’s certainly not a taste your dog will necessarily care for, which is just fine because nothing in this drink is healthy or safe for them to consume.

Can dogs have lemon water?

If you’re sipping lemon water on a hot day by the pool and your dog happens to sneak a quick lick, that’s okay. The water dilutes the lemon, so most of the acidity is gone. However, one or two licks are plenty, even if you have only a slice or two of lemon in your drink. If you’re thinking of adding a slice of lemon or two to their water dish, that’s a big no. Your dog’s water bowl should always have fresh, plain water.

Can dogs have lemon pastries?

Your pooch should stay away from lemon-flavored things such as popsicles, pies, and other food as well. These foods have added ingredients that aren’t safe for your dog and most likely have a ton of added sugar. If your dog laps up a couple of crumbs from that lemon pie that fell to the floor, that’s okay. Just be sure your pup doesn’t get a whole slice to themselves.

What about lemon essential oils?

Most essential oils are dangerous for dogs. They’re breathing in the same air as you, and some of these oils can be toxic for them. This includes lemon essential oils. However, there are essential oils made that are pet-friendly. Be sure to get those if you use essential oils in your home. Checking in with your dog’s vet isn’t a bad idea, either.

Can dogs have lemons?

The answer is no; dogs should not have lemons. While this fruit isn’t necessarily toxic to your dog, it can make them extremely sick if they ingest too much of the flesh or if they happen to eat some of the skin, seeds, or pith. Should this happen to your dog, monitor them for a day or two and call your vet immediately. In the meantime, there are plenty of other fruits that are safe for dogs to consume.
