Can Dogs Eat Mash?

Jul 9 ·

Can dogs eat mashed potatoes? Since fruits and vegetables are so good for humans, it’s only natural to assume they’re good for dogs too.

However, this isn’t always the case. Some fruits and veggies can be very bad for dogs and some, such as onions, can even be downright toxic. That’s why it’s important, when giving your dog anything at all, to do the research on the new food first — even if it seems like something that should be safe.

So, can dogs eat mashed potatoes, or are they actually better avoided?

Can Dogs Eat Mashed Potatoes?

Can Dogs Eat Mashed Potatoes

The short answer is yes. Plain mashed potatoes are fine for your dog to have every once in a while.

Are They Safe?

As long as they’re plain, there’s nothing about mashed potatoes that should harm your dog while given in moderation.

Are They Healthy?

Mashed potatoes do have some nutritional benefits for dogs, just as they do for humans.

The Benefits

Potatoes have vitamins B6 and C, iron, and magnesium. All of these nutrients are needed for dogs just as they are for humans, so it’s good for them to have sources of them. Your dog’s immune system and other things about their physical health can benefit from consuming things like mashed potatoes.

Aside from that, it’s a tasty treat that will help you bond with your dog. Dogs, understandably, might get bored of having the same food every day so if you’re looking to change it up every now and again by adding some treats, potatoes can be a pretty good choice.

Can Dogs Eat Mashed Potatoes? The Risks

The main huge risk of feeding your dog mashed potatoes is obesity. If you give your dog any human food too regularly, they might start to gain weight.

While it can be easy to overfeed your dog, you should try to avoid it. Obesity can open your dog up to a whole host of health problems and also puts a lot of strain on their joints and bones. Especially as they get older, this can be very dangerous.

The other risk comes from the extra ingredients. Don’t feed them some mashed potatoes from your plate as, chances are, it’s not plain. You’ve probably added salt, pepper, and butter, all of which are bad for dogs. You might even have added garlic and onion powder, which are so toxic to dogs that they can be fatal.

If you do want to feed your dog mashed potatoes, ensure they’re plain to mitigate these extra risks.

How Much Can They Eat?

You should start off by feeding your dog a very small amount to make sure their stomach can adjust to it, as dogs’ stomachs can be very sensitive to new food. Otherwise, it depends on the age, breed, and weight of your dog. Try to ensure it makes up no more than 10% of their daily calories, and don’t treat this as an everyday food.

How To Serve It

Can Dogs Eat Mashed Potatoes

There are many ways you can serve mashed potatoes that can make them very appetizing to a dog.

You could give them some plain as a treat, which is the easiest way. Put a little bit in their bowl and despite the lack of flavor, they’ll be sure to love it.

If you want to give them the occasional add-on to their food, you can use this as a food topper on their regular kibble every now and again. That’s a good way to make mealtime more enticing!

You could also stuff some in a KONG and freeze it, which will keep them occupied for a while. Frozen potato doesn’t seem great to us, but it’s fine for dogs — though you could always choose to do this with some fruit instead if that doesn’t seem too appetizing. KONGs are great tools to keep your dog distracted.

Other Snacks

Along with mashed potatoes, there are plenty of other vegetables that are good for dogs, such as:

Don’t assume that any vegetable you’re giving your dog is good for them, however. Onions are toxic and should never be given to a dog, even as an ingredient in something else.

Just because something is safe for humans doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the same way for dogs. Dogs have a different digestive system and don’t work the same way as humans, so their insides can be upset by a lot of different things. That’s why they can’t have grapes or chocolate!

So, can dogs eat mashed potatoes? The answer is yes, but you should consider a few things: how much they’re eating, any sensitivities they have to new food, and extra ingredients. Consuming mashed potatoes with salt and butter is not good for them. If they have any with garlic or onion powder, you should contact your veterinarian and monitor them closely.
