can dogs eat pecans?

You can give your pooch a small lick of peanut butter, but what other nuts are safe for dogs to eat? You may be wondering, can dogs eat pecans? The short answer is no. Dogs should steer clear of pecans for a couple of different reasons.

Sure, pecans have many health benefits for humans that could be good for dogs if eaten in large quantities. However, that’s just it – your dog shouldn’t eat a large number of pecans. One or two nuts may be okay, but pecans are actually dangerous for dogs to eat. So, it’s best to stay away from this one.

The dangers of pecans to dogs

If your dog happens to grab one or two nuts off the floor, then they’ll most likely be okay. However, you need to wary of small dogs since they have smaller bodies than larger dogs. Pecans can cause a gastrointestinal blockage and while one or two may okay for them to eat, it only takes one pecan to get stuck. That’s not the only thing to be wary about, though.

Mold

First, pecans are prone to getting mold. If your dog ingests mold then it may get poisoned due to the mold containing tremorgenic mycotoxins. This can cause tremors, seizures, and other neurological issues for your pup.

Juglone and aflatoxin

In addition, pecans carry juglone, which is toxic for dogs. If eaten in large amounts, your dog will suffer from gastrointestinal upset or an obstruction. It can make your dogs very sick. Symptoms of this poisoning may include:

  • Blackened or bloody stools
  • Bloody urine
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Orange-colored urine
  • Vomiting

Most of the time, these symptoms will only last a couple of hours. However, if it intensifies then you’ll need to call the emergency vet immediately. This can become fatal, so your best option is to call the vet right away when you notice symptoms. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Is there any safe way to feed your dog pecans?

Unfortunately, no. Since pecans contain too many toxics for dogs, it’s best to stay away from this nut altogether. If your dogs accidentally get a pecan or two, chances are they will be okay. Just monitor them for a few hours and make sure they don’t begin to show any symptoms of poison or a blockage.

Can dogs eat pecan pie?

Even if you give your dog a slice of pecan pie that has little or no nuts in it, the traces may still be there. In addition, pies typically have added sugar and other ingredients that are unhealthy for dogs. So, if you’re eating pecan pie around the holidays, be sure your pooch doesn’t get any crumbs.

Can dogs eat pecans from a tree?

Dogs should stay away from pecans from a tree as well. If you have a tree in your yard that produces pecans, then be sure to pick up any fallen nuts in your yard. You don’t want to take your dog outside and have them licking up pecans from the ground. Pecans straight from the trees will have the same problems as any other pecans.

Can dogs eat candied pecans?

Similar to pecan pie, dogs shouldn’t eat candied pecans. The toxins are still present in the nut and the candied effect just adds more sugar. This may cause your pooch to get sick from the sugar alone as their digestive system won’t be able to handle it.

Can dogs eat pecan ice cream?

Even though your dog won’t be able to choke or get a blockage because the pecans are within the ice cream, it’s still not a good idea to feed this to your dog. Ice cream contains a lot of sugar in general which is not healthy for your pup. Adding a flavor of something else that isn’t healthy, doesn’t make a good combination.

What to do if your dog eats pecans

Whether your dog accidentally eats one or two nuts or they eat a handful that had fallen onto the floor, then definitely monitor your dog for the next few hours to ensure they don’t show any signs of poisoning. It’s always a good idea to call your vet right away and give them the head’s up just in case. They’ll also be able to tell you what to do and what to watch out for. A couple of nuts will most likely be okay, but you’ll still want to keep an eye out.

If your dog happens to get into a bag of pecans and eats a ton of them, then call your veterinarian right away and bring your dog in. Even if they haven’t started showing symptoms yet, at least they’ll be in a medical area so the vet can care for your pooch right away.
