Can Dogs Eat Pizza?

Jul 1 ·

Can dogs eat pizza? Your dog undoubtedly loves the smell, and might be standing diligently by you while you eat, waiting for you to give them a piece. It happens all the time with human food, which looks great to dogs.

Before giving your dog a piece of anything, however, you should always make sure the food is safe for dogs. Many human food isn’t good for them, and can even be downright dangerous.

So, can dogs eat pizza, or is it better avoided?

Can Dogs Eat Pizza?

The short answer is, probably not. It really depends on the pizza, but there are many ingredients that are harmful to dogs.

Even if they do have a piece and don’t suffer adverse health effects, it’s definitely not good for them, and there are much better healthier snacks.

The Risks

The first and main risk is that they could be poisoned by some of the ingredients. Olives, onions, garlic, and other things commonly found on a pizza are very toxic to dogs and it could seriously damage them with consumed in large quantities. Small breeds and puppies under six months old are particularly susceptible to this, so even a few bites of pizza could end up doing more damage than you might ever have thought.

Another risk is the amount of cheese on a pizza. Giving cheese to a dog depends on the dog. Some dogs don’t handle dairy well and might end up with a severely upset stomach. Other dogs are fine and, in fact, enjoy the occasional sliver of cheese as a high-value training treat. Regardless, any cheese given to a dog should be in tiny amounts — not the amount that’s on a pizza!

There’s also a risk of obesity. Dogs don’t handle the high fat in pizza well and even if they seem to in the moment, it’s a slippery slope to obesity down the line.

Obesity can cause a whole host of health problems, as well as putting unnecessary strain on the joints and bones. This strain can make life very difficult on your dog and impact them in so many negative ways that it’s important to keep an eye on the body condition of your dog — and a sure way for it to become dangerous fast is feeding them things like pizza.

Can Dogs Eat Pizza? Are There Any Benefits?

There are pretty much no benefits to things like pizza. Even if you think you’re being kind in the moment, you’re doing your dog a whole lot of damage down the line.

You can’t even trust the crust, as it might be seasoned with garlic or onion powder (and even if not, it isn’t good for them).

Help! My Dog Ate Pizza

If your dog ate pizza, you’ll have to assess the damage. If it was a plain cheese pizza and they only ate a tiny bit, they’ll probably be fine, especially if they haven’t shown that they’re sensitive to cheese. Just keep a close eye on them for any signs of stomach upset.

If your dog is a small dog who ate a whole slice of pizza loaded with olives and roasted garlic, it paints a different picture. You should contact your veterinarian in this case, or an emergency clinic if your own veterinarian is closed.

The very least you should do is keep a close eye on them for any signs of pain or stomach upset. Vomiting and diarrhea is the most common sign that your pet’s stomach has been severely troubled by something passing through.

The important thing is not to panic. Chances are, your dog will be fine, but pizza should still be avoided just in case.

In the future, make sure you take preventative measures. Teach your dog the “leave it” command and make sure your friends and family are aware that they shouldn’t be giving your dog pizza when they’re around your pup.

Alternative Snacks

Just because your dog can’t have human food doesn’t mean they have to forego healthy snacks all together! The following fruits and veggies make a great snack:

Even some fruits and vegetables can be dangerous for dogs though. For example, you should never feed them onion, grapes, olives, or cherries. Just make sure to do your research before giving your dog any food that isn’t made for them and you should be just fine.

So, can dogs eat pizza? The answer is no! Although they may be fine in the moment, you’re taking a lot of unnecessary risks by giving them pizza and it could lead to health problems down the line. The ingredients in pizza are usually not dog-safe, so it can also cause severe stomach upset and even poison them. If your dog has consumed some pizza, the best thing to do is contact a veterinarian.
