can dogs eat pretzels?

We all love a good salty snack now and then. It’s no secret that, as dog owners, we want to share everything with our furry friends. Occasionally, you may sneak a bite of something to your pooch that they’re not supposed to eat. A little bit won’t hurt, right? So, when you’re munching on some snack mix, and you come across a pretzel, you may wonder, can dogs eat pretzels?

The short answer is no. Pretzels aren’t safe for dogs to consume. If they happen to eat one that fell onto the floor, that’s okay. One piece isn’t going to hurt them. However, a handful or adding pretzels to their diet will have consequences.

Let’s talk about it.

Why are pretzels bad for dogs?

Simply put, pretzels aren’t safe for your dog to eat because of the high salt content. Pretzels aren’t toxic to dogs, which is good, but the salt can be dangerous for your pooch to consume, especially in large amounts.

Too much sodium in your dog’s diet can lead to your pooch having to urinate frequently. After a while, your dog’s digestive system won’t be able to handle the salt intake and could end up with sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms of this may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Depression
  • Tremors
  • Fever
  • Seizures
  • Death (in severe cases)

If you happen to notice any of these signs in your dog when they’re feeling under the weather, then it’s best to call your veterinarian immediately.

Are there any types of pretzels you can feed your dog?

Plain, salted pretzels aren’t good for your dog to consume, and that also goes for other variants of pretzels. For example, chocolate-covered pretzels, candy-coated pretzels, yogurt pretzels, and other types are just as dangerous for your dog to eat.

Sometimes, pretzels are flavored with other ingredients such as onions or garlic. These ingredients are highly toxic to dogs and can not only make them sick but could have fatal consequences if it’s not treated or caught early enough.

Soft, unsalted pretzels are okay for your pooch to eat since it’s mostly bread. However, your pup should only eat that in moderation and small quantities as well. Too much can cause an upset stomach. Additionally, you don’t know what other ingredients may be in the pretzel that could hurt your pup.

Pretzels that are stuffed with cheese or peanut butter aren’t necessarily okay for your dog to consume, either. While peanut butter is safe for your dog, as long as it doesn’t contain xylitol, mixing it with a salty pretzel isn’t a good idea. The pretzel will still contain too much salt and carbohydrates for your dog to digest.

In addition, these kinds of pretzels may have added ingredients or preservatives to keep the peanut butter, cheese, or any other fillings from going bad.

Pretzels have no nutritional value for your pooch, and they contain a lot of carbohydrates. Dogs can’t properly digest too many carbs, so it’ll turn into fat in their system, thus leading to weight gain. Too much weight gain can cause your pup to become obese and, eventually, possibly getting diabetes.

What should you do if your dog eats too much pretzel?

Sometimes accidents happen. Whether a bag of pretzels spilled on the floor or your toddler decides to share their snack with the family pet, your dog might accidentally eat one too many pretzels. When this happens, call your vet immediately.

Depending on your dog’s age, size, and how much they might have eaten, your vet might ask you to bring your pup in right away. Alternatively, they may ask you to keep a close eye on them to see if any symptoms develop.

Your doggo might be totally fine, or they may be sick for a few days. Accidents happen, but it’s always better to be on the safe side.

How to prevent your dog from eating pretzels

The surest way to keep your dog away from pretzels and other salty snacks are to keep them in a high place. A high cabinet that your pup can’t reach or a locked cabinet that your pooch can’t break into.

In addition, if you have young kids or family members that enjoy feeding the dog human food that they’re not supposed to, be sure to keep those snacks out of reach as well so that your kids can’t give the dog dessert after dinner when you’re not looking.

Can dogs eat pretzels?

Technically, yes. Dogs can eat pretzels, but it’s better if they stay away from this salty snack. Your doggo will gain no nutritional value from it, and too much can cause them to get sick. There are plenty of other alternatives out there to feed your furry friend as a treat.
