When growing fresh strawberries in your garden during the warmer days, you might ask yourself, can dogs eat strawberries? The short answer is yes. You can give your furry friend a couple of strawberries as a healthy, quick treat.

Before trying this new treat with your pup, be sure to talk to their veterinarian first. Since every dog is different, you’ll want to make sure that strawberries will be a safe option to try with your dog. In addition, there are a few things to watch out for when giving strawberries to your dog, so talking it out with your vet will give you a good idea of what to watch out for.

Health benefits of feeding dogs strawberries

First, let’s talk about the nutritional benefits of giving your dog strawberries. These small berries can help your dog in more ways than one. Not only is it healthy for them, but strawberries are delicious, so your pooch will surely want you to share. Strawberries contain:

  • High water content
  • Fiber
  • Vitamins B1, B6, C, and K
  • Minerals (such as potassium, iodine, magnesium, and folic acid)
  • Teeth-whitening enzymes
  • Antioxidants
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (for healthy skin and coat)

Strawberries are also a low-calorie snack. These berries will strengthen your dog’s immune system, slow the aging process, and help weight management.

Risks of feeding strawberries to dogs

All of those health benefits sound great, right? Absolutely. However, there are a few things to watch out for when giving your dog this tasty treat. For example, strawberries are naturally high in sugar. This can cause diabetes down the road, weight gain, and make your pooch sick with an upset stomach.

Too many strawberries can cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Also, you’ll want to be wary of any food allergies your dog may have. Strawberries can cause an allergic reaction in dogs, just like humans. After giving your doggo strawberries, if you notice they’re sneezing, coughing, swelling, develop a skin rash, or have difficulty breathing, then you need to bring your dog to the vet immediately.

An allergic reaction is one reason to consult with your veterinarian first. When trying this berry for the first time with your doggo, be sure to give them a little bit of strawberry at a time. For instance, give them one strawberry (or half of one, depending on its size) and see how they react. After a day or two, you can try giving your dog another strawberry and see how their digestive system agrees with it.

How to safely serve strawberries to your dog

Fresh strawberries are the way to go when feeding this yummy treat to your pooch. You can buy organic strawberries without pesticides or grow your own berries in your garden at home. Either way, wash the strawberries thoroughly and cut off the top with the leaves on it. You can also cut the strawberries into smaller bite-sized pieces to avoid a choking hazard, especially for smaller dogs.

Besides whole strawberries, you can freeze them to make a quick, nutritious chew toy for your dog. Be sure to monitor them, especially if they’re a teething puppy, so they don’t accidentally swallow a large piece and choke. Alternatively, you can mash or puree strawberries to use as a food topper on your dog’s commercial food to add a little extra flavor. Or, you can add the pureed strawberries to an ice cube tray and freeze them, making a popsicle for a hot day.

Can dogs have canned strawberries?

Canned strawberries are not safe for dogs to eat. This is because they typically contain added sugar and other ingredients that are harmful to your pooch. They also typically are coated in a sugary syrup that’s also not good for dogs.

Can dogs have strawberry-flavored food or pastries?

Strawberries that are baked into a pie or other food items that are strawberry-flavored shouldn’t be added to your dog’s diet, either. These often have too much added sugar and other ingredients that your dog shouldn’t consume. The best way to feed your dog strawberries is through the fresh fruit from your own garden or bought from the store.
