Canaan Dog Puppies

The Canaan Dog is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the herding group. Initially bred in Isreal in ancient times, this breed was first developed for sentry, messenger, and assistance. Today, they’re confident, vigilant, and alert. If you want to learn more about Canaan Dog puppies, keep reading.

Where to get Canaan Dog Puppies

When searching for this dog breed, you’ll want to check your local animal shelter or breed rescue organization first. These dogs are looking for the right family to come along as they are often found as strays or were surrendered by their previous owners.

In addition, these places might have Canaan Dog puppies, adults, seniors, or mixed breeds available for adoption. You can save a dog’s life while providing them a forever, loving home. It’s always best to adopt and not shop. Emma…

On the other hand, if you want a puppy and know where the dog came from, you can go through a reputable breeder. Luckily, this doggo is purebred and recognized by the American Kennel Club. So, you can begin your search for ethical breeders on the AKC Marketplace.

You’ll be able to tell good breeders from the rest because they’ll do the following:

  • Health screen and genetically test the parents before breeding to ensure it’s safe and healthy to do so (then get the puppies tested)
  • Have health documents and family tree history available for you to bring home upon adoption
  • Allow the dogs and puppies to live in their home as part of the family without the use of kennels (aside from crate training)
  • Want to meet with you in person to get to know you and so you can meet the parents and the litter
  • Be open and honest with you, able to answer all your questions about the breeder, the breed, the parents, the litter, or the adoption or breeding processes

In addition, the breeder will socialize and train the puppies as early as possible and ensure they’re all up to date with their vaccinations.

So, if you happen to come across a breeder that doesn’t do the above, then you’ll want to avoid working with them. For instance, they don’t breed the dogs in healthy or safe conditions. Also, they strive to make a profit from the puppies rather than finding them good homes.

The Cost

The average cost of Canaan Dog puppies can range anywhere between $800 and $2,000. However, the price can vary depending on many factors, such as the breeder’s location, the breed’s popularity, the number of puppies in the litter, the time of year, and more.

Canaan Dog puppies will grow to be medium-sized dogs with slightly bigger males than females. For example, males can grow to be 20 to 24 inches tall and weigh between 45 and 55 pounds. On the other hand, females can grow to be about 19 to 23 inches tall and weigh between 35 and 45 pounds.

In addition, they have a short and smooth double coat that can come in many coat colors and markings, such as:

  • Black
  • Cream
  • Golden
  • Liver
  • Red
  • Tan
  • White
  • Tan Markings
  • Black Markings
  • Cream Markings
  • White Trim
  • Liver Markings
  • Gold Markings
  • Red Markings

Canaan Dogs are loyal and affectionate with their family members. Also, they’re great around young children, other dogs, and meeting new people. However, they can be wary of them or shy at first. So, early socialization and proper training are a must.

Luckily, this dog breed is easy to train. However, you can hire a professional dog trainer to help you out if needed. Buddy…

Also, they have moderate energy levels and will do okay living in an apartment. However, they’ll prefer living in a bigger house with a fenced-in yard.

Canaan Dog Puppies – Veterinary Needs

For the first year, you’ll want to bring your Canaan Dog puppy to the vet a few times to keep track of their growth and development. Also, you’ll be able to keep them up to date with their shots and boosters.

Then, for each year after that, you can bring them to the vet at least once a year for their annual checkup. For example, this dog breed is prone to getting a few health issues, such as:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Elbow Dysplasia
  • Patellar Luxation
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
  • Mono/Bilateral Cryptorchidism
  • Epilepsy

With proper care, Canaan Dog puppies have an average lifespan of about 12 to 15 years.

You can provide this doggo with anything appropriate for breed size, age, weight, and metabolism. For example, with your vet’s approval, you can feed them high-quality kibble or canned wet food from a commercial dog food brand or homemade dog food.

Luckily, this doggo is low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. You can bring them to a professional grooming salon once every few months for a good cleaning, or you can bathe them as needed at home.

However, they do shed a lot. So, to keep the shedding under control, you can brush their coat at least three to four times per week.

In addition, remember to keep up with brushing their teeth, trimming their nails, and cleaning their ears regularly.
