While there’s nothing wrong with owning a mixed breed dog, you should be careful if you’re taking the breeder route. It’s a little easier to tell who’s a good one among purebred dogs, because breeders can register them with the AKC or other registries. When it comes to mixed breeds, they can’t and won’t have papers, so it can be harder to tell if the mix is genuine. When getting a mix from a breeder, do as much research as possible. Otherwise, you could get a dog with health issues.
Their coats will usually be short (but they’ll still shed) and they’ll be very small dogs. They come in various colors, but are usually some form or mix of brown.
Their temperament will be a mix of the two breeds. Their energy needs shouldn’t be too high, but they’ll still need a daily walk and mental stimulation to keep them satisfied. Although they’ll likely be intelligent, they also may have a stubborn and independent side you should be prepared for. This can be combated by early training and socialization, and using nothing but positive reinforcement to form good habits. Make sure you never punish them for their stubborn side, or you’ll create a fearful dog.
