Many people haven’t heard of the Cirneco Del’Etna. It’s a hunting dog from Sicily that’s not all too common in the States, so it makes sense.
If you’ve never heard of them, we can give you a rundown.
They’re brown dogs that only come in chestnut or tan, and they’re incredibly lean. Much like Greyhounds, people often think these dogs are too skinny when their weight is actually optimal. They stand at up to 19″ tall and are also recognizable by their long tail and pricked ears.
A little more trainable than other sighthounds, these dogs are affectionate with their family and usually good with other dogs too. However, as they’re hunting dogs, you should be very wary when introducing them to smaller animals. Never leave them unsupervised with cats or rabbits, for example, and you may be better off with another breed if you own these smaller animals.
Like many other breeds, the Cirneco Del’Etna does well when it has a job to do. You can enter them into agility courses or find some way to tire out their energy. They have moderate exercise needs, so you’ll have to take them on some nice long walks to ensure they’re getting the physical stimulation they need. As with any intelligent dog, mental stimulation is also essential.
