If you want to see some Cockalier photos, we’ve got some great ones here.
The Cockalier is a mix between the Cocker Spaniel and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. You should be careful if you’re seeking out a mixed breed dog, however. It can be more difficult to predict health issues in a mixed breed dog and as they can’t be registered with the AKC, backyard breeders are prone to selling them and falsely representing what they actually are. For example, a Cockalier might have other breeds mixed in as well as the two spaniels.
If you do manage to find a legitimate Cockalier, however, they make great dogs. They’re usually brown and white, fairly small dogs with the distinct, long floppy ears.
They are very intelligent dogs but unlike many other clever breeds, they don’t usually have a stubborn streak. This makes them a good option for first-time owners. They’re loyal and will dedicate themselves to their owners as long as you treat them well. This means starting training and socialization early, and using nothing but positive reinforcement to train them. Anything else will damage your bond with them.
They can live well in apartments, but they do have high exercise needs. A long, daily walk should satisfy them, as well as plenty of mental stimulation. As they’re intelligent dogs, they’ll do best with a job to do. Teach them some tricks or household tasks they can help with!
