The Collie comes in a few varieties, with different coat lengths and colors. However, in general, these breeds aren’t good for allergies. You can expect some shedding and to have to brush them a lot, as purebred collies usually have a longer coat. They stand at up to 26″ tall, making them fairly large dogs.
Everyone’s heard of Collies, which means you likely know that they’re a herding breed. This is an instinct that’s very hard to curb, and the first thing you should be aware of when getting one. They can try to herd smaller animals and children, which often means nipping at them! Although you can work on recall and “leave it”, it’s what they’re naturally prone to doing. Buying a herding ball to give them an outlet can help, if you have a yard.
Energetic Dogs
Collies are some of the most energetic dogs around. They need plenty of exercise to satisfy them, as well as a lot of mental and physical stimulation. They’re great dogs to get into agility with and good outdoor companions. The good thing about them is their high intelligence, as they’re always up for learning new things and happiest when they have a job to do. If you want a dog who can learn some awesome party tricks, a Collie might be for you!
They are, however, a challenge for first-time owners due to that high energy. Despite their herding, they love children though!
