If you’ve never seen one of these, check out these Croatian Sheepdog photos to see what the breed looks like!

As you may be able to tell from the name, this breed was developed in Croatia. They’re usually black, though they may have some white patches on their coat. These medium-sized dogs have a long wavy or curly coat, and their tails curl if they remain undocked. They have fox-like heads that people usually notice quickly.

Because they’re sheepdogs, these dogs have massive herding energy. That means you should be careful around children and small animals. Although they shouldn’t be aggressive, they may try to herd them which could mean nipping at them. You can curb this by teaching them a good “leave it” and recall, although this can take many months to become reliable.

A High Energy Dog

The main thing to note about this breed, however, is their enormous energy. These dogs aren’t suited for owners who don’t want to give them a lot of exercise. They can become bored and destructive if they can’t let out their energy. They’re also highly intelligent, which means they’ll need mental stimulation too. They’re easy to train for that reason, but can be hard to keep up with!

They do tend to bond to one person, which can be an issue in families. Make sure you socialize and train them early and familiarize them with lots of people.

To truly understand this breed you can look at some of these photos of the dog from a puppy right through to a senior dog. Click on any of the links and you will discover some of the very best Instagram accounts to follow. As you will see from the photos this is a breed you will quickly fall in love with.
