Would you like to learn more about this breed? Browse through our collection of English Springer Spaniel photos!

Springer spaniels were originally bred during the 17th century. English hunters used these talented dogs to flush game birds from tall grass. From there, the spaniel also pointed out game and retrieved shot fowl. The English Springer Spaniel was both a faithful hunting companion and a loving and affectionate family dog. The breed was first introduced to North America in the 1920s. From then on, they won the hearts of hunters and dog lovers alike.

The English Springer Spaniel has a medium-length double coat. This helps keep them warm for whatever outdoor activities you both enjoy. Their coats can come in a variety of colors and markings. To keep them looking their best, brush an English Springer Spaniel thoroughly once a week. You can either trim their fur yourself, or take them to a professional groomer for regular haircuts. Check your Spaniel for mats, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits, the belly, and under their tail. Trim their nails regularly. Since they have floppy ears, you should check inside regularly for debris and signs of infection.

High-Energy, Extroverted, and Friendly

English Springer Spaniels are fairly high-energy and will do best with daily exercise. You could stick to daily walks and play time in the yard, or enroll in more structured canine sports. English Springer Spaniels love swimming and water, too.

In training, this breed is highly intelligent and eager to please. However, English Springer Spaniels are also eager to take the lead and explore. We recommend using gentle guidance and positive reinforcement techniques. Puppy socialization classes are a necessary first step to get your English Springer Spaniel used to new people, dogs, and situations.

This is a breed that doesn’t do well on its own for long periods of time. If you’re not able to devote a significant amount of time to your dog, an English Springer Spaniel may not be right for you. Luckily, these dogs are usually friendly with everybody. They do well with kids, making them great family companions. They’re open to strangers, and do well with other dogs.

To truly understand this breed you can look at some of these photos of the dog from a puppy right through to a senior dog.
