English dog breeders in the late 1800s were focused on the rising popularity of the dog show. They mixed a range of spaniels, including Cocker, English, Springer, and Sussex, to create the Field Spaniel. The show breeding practices resulted in a collapse of the Field Spaniel bloodline that wasn’t rectified until the 1960s. Today, while Fields aren’t the most popular breed of spaniel, they’ve still won the hearts of many owners and families.
Field Spaniels have a variety of coat colors in black and shades of liver. Their hair is smooth, glossy, and medium-length. They look their best with weekly brushing and combing. They may need minimal trimming around their head and their feet, but don’t require body clipping like some spaniel breeds. Take special care of the feathering on their ears and the backs of their legs.
A Friendly Dog
Field Spaniels enjoy both playing and relaxing. They need regular physical exercise and mental stimulation. Their intelligence and energy make them good participants in organized canine sports. Use clear communication and rewards while training.
Field Spaniels are very sweet and affectionate dogs. They’re great with kids of all ages, very good with other dogs, and welcoming to strangers.
