The Fila Brasileiro is also known as the Brazilian mastiff. Though little is known about their history, they were most likely brought to Brazil from Europe during the Colonial era. Breeders mixed English mastiffs, bulldogs, and bloodhounds to create the Fila Brasileiro. These fierce dogs made adept large game hunters, guard dogs, and livestock protectors. In the past, they joined human owners to trail and hunt jaguar!
Fila Brasileiros have smooth, short hair. Their coats come in a variety of colors, including fawn, brindle, black, and mouse-grey. You should brush your Fila Brasileiro once weekly with a gentle grooming glove. Check their loose skin flaps regularly for signs of irritation and infection.
An Energetic Dog
A Fila Brasileiro will need lots of space to run around and exercise. They can have a fast pace, running at a speed up to 35 miles an hour! This breed does best with 2 or 3 long, daily walks.
Before you commit to this breed, make sure to check whether you can own a Fila Brasileiro where you live. Several countries have prohibited ownership. Socialization is the most important aspect of training a Fila Brasileiro. Without devoted socialization as a puppy, this breed may be aggressive towards strangers. It’s important to set up clear boundaries if you’re planning on introducing your dog to children. Supervise any interaction between the Fila Brasileiro, children, and other dogs. Since the Fila Brasileiro has a very strong prey drive, introducing them to a family with smaller dogs or cats isn’t the best idea. Under the right circumstances, a Fila Brasileiro can make a devoted and loyal pet.
