Learn more about this unique breed with our collection of Finnish Lapphund photos!

For thousands of years, the Finnish Lapphund and its ancestors have herded reindeer. They’re best known as companions to the nomadic indigenous peoples of northern and Arctic Europe, including the Sami. Reindeer herding is a job which takes stamina, strength, intelligence, and quick instincts for dodging antlers. Finnish Lapphunds have also spent millennia cuddling up to their families in their tents on cold winter nights. This could help explain their tendency towards deep family connections and affection.

Finnish Lapphunds have double, medium length coats in a variety of colors. We recommend weekly brushing when they’re not shedding, and daily brushing when they are. Check for mats on the belly, behind the ears, and under the tail. Do not shave a Finnish Lapphund unless it is absolutely necessary. Their weatherproof coats protect them from sun and heat as well as cold.

An Active Dog

The Finnish Lapphund has moderate energy levels. A daily brisk walk or 30 minute play session should suffice. These dogs also do well in organized herding trials and canine sports. Don’t spend too much time away from a Finnish Lapphund. This may cause undesirable or destructive behaviors.

Finnish Lapphunds have a deep affection and empathy for their family members. They’re even ok with strangers, once they’ve figured out your houseguests mean no harm to their family, or their reindeer. They’re good with children, and all right with other dogs and pets.
