The Finnish Spitz is currently Finland’s most popular dog breed. Historians theorize Russian visitors brought the breed’s ancestors to Finland about 3,000 years ago. For centuries, it’s served as a bird-hunter with a unique style. On hunting trips, the Finnish Spitz uses its unique vocalizations and slow tail wagging. These hypnotize birds and freeze them in place.
The Finnish Spitz has a double coat of medium length. Its fur is a beautiful red-gold color. Most groomers recommend bringing in your Finnish Spitz for regular trimming around the feet. Every 2-3 days, brush your Finkie thoroughly with a pin brush, lightly spraying their coat with water first. This should help cut down on dead hair during their two shedding seasons.
A Powerful Dog
Finnish Spitzes have great stamina. Their physical energy helped them last for long hunts in the deep woods. Today’s Finnish Spitz will do best with a daily leashed walk. Make sure you can provide your Finkie with a well-fenced yard to run and play.
Finnish Spitzes make wonderful family dogs. They’re very affectionate with family members, forming deep emotional bonds. The breed is great with kids of all ages and behaves well with other dogs. They tend to be a bit more reserved around strangers. During training, you might notice a self-willed and independent temperament.
