If you want to look at some Hamiltonstovare photos to get an idea of what they look like, we’ve got you covered.
These are scent hounds from Sweden who hunt hare and foxes. They look a little like English Foxhounds, but tend to be lighter. They have brown, black, and white coats just the same though. These dogs stand at up to 24″ and have a double coat, though it is very short. It does get thicker during winter to protect them from the cold.
These dogs are very affectionate and sweet, as is typical of a scent hound. They love their humans and want to be by their side at all times. They’re happy in the home and happy out in the field, and tend to be very adaptable dogs. Due to being scent hounds, they can have a bit of a prey drive, so you should take care when introducing them to cats or other small animals. If you bring them up with the animals from puppies, it can work, but still never leave them unsupervised.
An Independent Dog
Another thing to bear in mind is that these dogs love to go off and do what they want. This means they don’t always listen to their owner! So combat this by getting their training started early. Start teaching a good recall at a young age, because it will take months to become reliable, and use positive reinforcement to build up a good relationship.
