One major way to keep your dog healthy and clean is by bathing and grooming them occasionally. Depending on your dog’s coat type, their grooming needs will differ from other dogs. So, how often should you use professional dog grooming? We have all the answers and more here.

Long Haired Dogs Vs. Short Haired Dogs

All dogs need to be bathed and groomed. Grooming includes brushing your dog’s fur, trimming their nails, cleaning their ears, and ensuring their fur or hair is well cared for.

Dog breeds with long hair, such as the Afghan Hound or Bearded Collie, typically require more maintenance than a short-haired dog. For example, long-haired breeds tend to get their fur tangled and matted if it’s not kept up regularly.

Short-haired dog breeds, such as a Boxer or Dalmatian, can also have their fur matted. However, it’s less likely. Regardless, they need regular grooming maintenance as well. Grooming is great for skin health and helps keep your dog clean and healthy overall.

How Do You Know Your Dog Needs Regularly Grooming?

All dogs need regular bathing, and grooming like humans do. However, dogs can have sensitive skin and different coat types. So, how can you tell how often you need to groom your pup?

Research The Dog Breed

The first thing you should do is research your dog’s breed before adopting. Make sure they’re the right breed that will fit you and your lifestyle. When doing your research, look up their coat type and grooming needs.

Talk To Your Vet

You can also talk to your vet. Before you adopt the dog or during their first vet appointment, ask about their grooming needs. The vet should give you a good indication of when and how often you can bring them to a professional dog grooming salon.

Bring Them To A Professional Dog Grooming Salon

One of the best ways to determine how often your doggo needs to be groomed is to ask a professional dog groomer. During your first visit, the groomer can suggest what you can do at home to keep them clean and how often you should come back to the salon.

How Often Should You Use Professional Dog Grooming?

As a general rule, you should bring your doggo to a professional dog grooming salon at least once every four to six weeks.

Again, this will depend on your dog’s coat type and skin sensitivity. In some cases, you can bring them once every four weeks, alternating between a bath and a full groom.

For example, bring them to get a bath, and then four weeks later, bring them again to get a bath and a groom. Then, after another four weeks, bring them to get a bath.

You can bathe your dog at home. It is cheaper for you, but it’s also a great bonding experience for you and your furry friend.

In addition, whether you bathe your dog at home or not, you should always have grooming supplies at your house. For example, you should have shampoo for your dog, a brush, and nail clippers.

If they get into something they weren’t supposed to do outside, you can give them a quick bath. Also, depending on how much your dog sheds and their coat type, you should brush their fur regularly.

Reasons To Bring Your Dog To A Professional Grooming Salon

Even though you can bathe your dog at home, it’s not recommended to groom them or cut their hair unless you’re professionally trained. Groomers know how to handle various coats and keep your dog clean and healthy.

Groomers Do It All And Have The Right Tools

One of the biggest reasons you should use professional dog grooming is that they do everything, including what you don’t want to do.

For example, they’ll bathe and brush your dog as you would at home. However, they also know different styled haircuts and will also do other things for your dog’s overall health.

For instance, dog groomers will get rid of fleas and ticks and clean your dog’s anal glands. These are all things that you won’t be able to do at home.

They Know How To Care For Dogs

In addition, groomers know how to handle and care for dogs. They’ve dealt with many aggressive or anxious dogs to be at the grooming salon. Also, they have plenty of experience with dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds.

It Socializes Your Dog

Finally, bringing your dog to a grooming salon will keep them clean and healthy, but it’s good for them mentally, too. For instance, it’ll allow your dog to get out of the house and spend some time away from you for a bit.

This can help combat separation anxiety, and it’ll also allow your dog to socialize with other dogs and strangers as they get used to the groomers.

Should You Bring Your Pup To A Professional Grooming Salon?

The short answer is yes. It’s healthy for your dog physically and mentally. Plus, you’ll have an adorable pup with a cut haircut that smells great.
