Check out some Irish Wolfhound photos here.

Irish Wolfhounds are large dogs and can look intimidating! They have a pretty commanding stance, with wide ribs. Their coats are rough, short, and wiry. This does mean, however, that their grooming needs are pretty low, because rough coats shed less. They’re very muscular, and almost have the shape of a greyhound. They also have floppy ears hanging by the side of their head.

Despite the fact that Irish wolfhounds are large, fast dogs, they’re very gentle. They look intimidating, but they’re not! They’re like to lounge around rather than constantly be on the move, which shocks people who are expecting a very high-energy dog. Like most dogs, they still need regular walks and enrichment, but their energy levels are nowhere near that of some higher-energy breeds.

A Huge Dog

The one main thing to watch out for with Irish Wolfhounds is that they love to chase small animals. If you have cats, take introductions very slowly and never leave them alone unsupervised. This problem is even worse with smaller animals like rabbits or rodents, and this dog may not be the breed for you.

Other than that, however, these dogs are truly amazing. They make loyal pets and will be devoted to their new families. They do need some space to roam due to the sheer size of them, but you have the room, you won’t regret this choice of breed.
