Also called the Italian Sighthound, this dog is the smallest of all the sighthounds! It’s usually solid black or grey with some white, and doesn’t weigh over 11lb, making it truly tiny — not what most people think of when they think of the Greyhound. It has a tucked up abdomen, and is long and slender, giving it a very graceful appearance.
Affectionate and intelligent, these dogs need a lot of exercise and a lot to do despite their small appearance. Plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise will go a long way with these dogs. They can get mischievous when bored, so the key is to give them plenty of distractions. Puzzles work well for this, as well as lick mats and frozen KONGs, which will mentally wear them out.
Not Ideal If You Have Smaller Animals
They are highly affectionate with people but don’t do well with smaller animals. They may get along well with cats since cats are a similar size to them, but you should take introductions slowly even then. Don’t rush things, and remove them if they seem aggressive. It’s unlikely they’ll get along with even smaller animals since they have a penchant for chasing rodents.
If you have smaller animals, they may not be the dog for you but if you don’t, they’re great. They’re a truly loving and agile companion who will keep you amused with their boundless energy. Just make sure you have plenty of things for them to do to stop them getting into mischief!
