If you want to see some Karelian Bear Dog photos, look no further. We’ve got some great ones here.

The Karelian Bear Dog comes from Finland. It can weigh up to around 65lb, making it a medium-sized breed of dog that verges on large. They are black with white markings, and their tail curves into a whole circle. They have a straight coat with a thick undercoat to keep them warm in the cold, but this should never be shaved. These coats do require regular brushing.

These dogs love their owners, and are truly people dogs. They’re very affectionate with humans and demonstrate a lot of loyalty. They are a working breed, so they require a lot of stimulation. This means both physical and mental. They need lots of walking and plenty of room to run around, and you can keep up with mental stimulation using puzzles, lick mats, and other enrichment tools.

A Protective Dog

The main thing to be aware of with these dogs is that they are notoriously territorial and do not like other animals. You’ll have to socialize them extensively as puppies and even then, they should be an only pet. Not only does their hunting instinct kick in with smaller animals, but they don’t like other dogs either.  They are great dogs, but if you have other animals, they may not be the best choice.

It’s important to socialize any dog as a puppy, but with these dogs, it’s especially so.
