Dog training can be one of the most rewarding aspects of pet ownership. However, it can be stressful too. Every breed has its own unique training needs, and Cavalier King Charles spaniels are no exception. We’ve made a list of five King Charles training tips to help get your spaniel off on the right paw.

How To Train Your King Charles Spaniel

King Charles are naturally loving and adaptable dogs. With positive reinforcement, they learn quickly. Using patience and kindness, encourage behavior you want to see, gently reprimanding or ignoring behavior you don’t like. Here are five King Charles training tips to get you started.

1. Combine Training With Exercise

King Charles spaniels are energetic dogs who need 30 minutes of exercise a day. While you can stick with the standard walks and fetch sessions, exercise and play can be great opportunities for training. If throwing a ball, teach them to follow a command before you throw. You can also use games as rewards for good behavior.

2. Socialize Your Puppy

One of the most important parts of training any dog is proper socialization. This will be especially important if your King Charles is a puppy. In your first few weeks of ownership, make sure to introduce your puppy to as many new experiences and people as possible. Reward your puppy with treats, teaching them to associate new experiences with something positive.

3. Make Them Work For What They Want

This method is often referred to as “Nothing in Life is Free.” This is not punishment, rather, it is meant to teach your dog not to expect things it wants without following your commands first. For example, you could wait until your King Charles is no longer jumping on you for their meal before putting it down in front of them. This especially works with more dominant King Charles spaniels.

4. Do Not Use Punishment

Yelling at or striking your dog, especially if they’re young and still learning, is a very bad idea. Likewise, you should not punish or threaten them with isolation in a crate. These methods do more harm than good in the long run. Better training techniques involve positive reinforcement, and ignoring undesirable behavior.

5. Get Them Used To The Car

A ride in a car may seem intimidating to a small dog like a King Charles. However, car rides will end up being a frequent event for them. After teaching them “sit” and “stay” commands, see how they do on a short car ride. Those commands are very important for building trust, and making sure your dog doesn’t hurt themselves in a new situation.
