Choosing Labrador puppies is very exciting but it can also be very stressful. It is very important to make sure you get a healthy puppy to save yourself from lots of future problems and potential heartbreak. This is the most popular breed in America so you can expect a great dog if you follow these simple tips.

To make this whole ordeal easier for you, we’ve put together a list of 5 things to look out for when choosing your Labrador puppy.

Things To Look Out For When Getting Labrador Puppies

While all breeders should, technically, be selling healthy puppies, this is simply not the case. Taking your time to find a reputable Labrador breeder and carefully deciding on which puppy you want will definitely pay off. Here are 5 things to consider when choosing your Labrador puppy:

1. Find A Responsible Breeder

It is best to select a breeder that is concerned with the health of their dogs like those registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). If they had previous litters you can ask for references from other owners.

2. Meet Your Labrador Puppies Parents

Your puppy will inherit many characteristics from its parents. By meeting the parents you can observe their behavior, temperament, and health. This will allow you to predict what your puppy will be like.

3. Ask For The Health Screenings Of Your Puppies Parents

Any responsible breeder will make it a point to get their breeding animals tested for hereditary conditions. The results should be available on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA’s) website.

4. Choose A Puppy That Looks Healthy

Healthy puppies have lots of energy, clear eyes, and a glossy coat. There should be no obvious signs of parasites or infections. Their living conditions should feel, smell and look clean with fresh water and food readily available.

5. Ask For Vaccination Records

Puppies should get their first vaccination at around 6 weeks old. Puppies from reputable breeders usually come with their first shot and vet visit already done by the breeder.
