Fortunately, the movie world is filled with some awesome features that have dogs at the center of them. From the hilarious to the super emotional that will make you want to hug your dog and never let go, these are the movies that every dog lover should see.

1. Marley & Me

Marley & Me might be one of the most famous dog movies. It follows the journey of a family who adopts a Labrador retriever puppy that then stays with them through every life change they have.

Marley is a wildly misbehaving puppy, providing some laughs throughout the dog’s life, but is heart-warmingly loyal and sticks with the family when they need him most. Despite the challenges he provides, he’ll provide you that it’s worth sticking it out with your dog for the devoted friend they’ll become.

2. A Dog’s Purpose

A Dog’s Purpose follows the reincarnated spirit of a dog who experiences various lives, from being a dog who’s euthanized after being found on the streets, to a police dog, to an abandoned pup. The movie is a rollercoaster and will have you laughing and crying in equal measure as it takes you through the various lives of different dogs and how a situation can really change the life a dog gets.

3. Homeward Bound

For a less comedic option, Homeward Bound will truly break your heart.

Three pets become lost when their family goes on vacation. They believe them to be in trouble, so go searching for them. Shadow, the eldest is unwaveringly loyal; Chance, more of a puppy, is still very mischievous; and their cat companion Sassy can barely keep up with their antics.

Together, they traverse the wilderness, and there are many times we think they might just not make it home.

The Secret Life of Pets is a family-friendly movie that’s guaranteed to have you laughing. You will be left truly believing this is what goes on in your dog’s head. It’s a comedic attempt at explaining exactly what your pets are thinking half the time, and what their logic is when they do the seemingly unthinkable.

All in all, it’s a little too relatable. If you’re looking for something light-hearted that the kids can watch with you, this is the movie to go for.

5. Togo

Recently released on Disney Plus, Togo explores the true story of a sled dog in Alaska. He was tasked with retrieving medicine for sick children. Although the story is dramatic and saddening, this movie focuses not on the children or disease, but the loyalty of Togo and how his willingness to do anything for his owner saved lives. A truly beautiful creature.

This movie will remind you just how amazing dogs can be, and how we sometimes really don’t deserve dogs. Togo is a wonderful example of a best friend who will make you want to hug your own.
