The Pekingese is a purebred dog breed that’s part of the toy group. They were initially bred into royalty, being companion dogs for the Emporer. They are known to be regal in manner but also affectionate and loyal. If you want to learn more about Pekingese puppies, then keep reading.

Where To Get Pekingese Puppies

Pekingese is a popular dog breed, so you should be able to find them just about anywhere. For example, a good place to start would be your local animal shelter or rescue organization. They might have Pekingese puppies, adults, or seniors. Alternatively, they could have a mixed breed with Pekingese genes. However, you can still gain a furry friend while saving a dog’s life. But if you genuinely want a purebred Pekingese puppy, then you can look for a reputable breeder. Since this dog breed is purebred, they are recognized by the American Kennel Club. So, a good place to start your search would be the AKC Marketplace since most ethical breeders are registered there.

You’ll be able to tell a good breeder from the rest because they’ll do the following:

  • Health screen and genetically test the parents (before breeding) and the puppies after birth
  • Have health documents prepared for you to take home
  • Socialize and train the puppies as early as possible
  • Ensure the puppies are up to date with their vaccinations
  • Want to meet with you in person and allow you to meet the parents and the litter

In addition, they’ll be knowledgeable about the breed as a whole and be able to answer all your questions and help you every step of the way.

If you find a breeder who doesn’t do the above, they could be a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. Avoid these breeders since they’re more interested in making a profit rather than finding good homes for the puppies. Also, they don’t breed the dogs in healthy or safe conditions. Tofutickles…

The Cost

The cost can vary based on the puppy’s lineage, coat color, or age. It also depends upon the breed’s popularity, the number of puppies in the litter, and the breeder’s location. The range for Pekingese puppies is wide, being between $750 and $3,000.

Appearance

Pekingese are, of course, small dogs. For instance, they can grow between six and nine inches tall and weigh up to 14 pounds. Also, they have a long double coat that can come in many different colors and markings.

For example, a Pekingese’s coat can be:

  • Biscuit
  • Black
  • Black & Tan
  • Cream
  • Fawn
  • Gray
  • Red
  • Red Sable
  • White
  • Fawn Sable
  • Gray Sable
  • Black Mask
  • White Markings
  • Parti-Color

Temperament

Remember that the Pekingese come from royalty, and they’ll act as such. However, they’re still loyal and affectionate with their family members. But when it comes to other dogs, young children, or strangers, the Pekingese will be wary. Not only were they bred to be companion dogs, but they were also bred to be watchdogs for royalty. So, they’ll need some time to warm up to others. In addition, they enjoy the one-on-one attention with their owners, so they prefer to be the only one around.

Luckily, the Pekingese will only bark when they feel the need to alert you of something. So, with their quietness, small size, and moderate energy levels, you can safely live in an apartment with this dog breed. Of course, they’ll enjoy a bigger house with a fenced-in yard, but they’ll most likely be by your side all the time. So, a small apartment is just fine.

Also, they don’t require too much exercise other than a daily walk. But, on the other hand, they do enjoy playing. So, having a yard of their own to play games with you will be a lot of fun. Oreo…

Pekingese Puppies – Veterinary Needs

As with all dogs, you’ll want to bring your puppy to the vet a couple of times during their first year so that they can stay up to date with their shots and boosters. Also, you can keep track of their growth and development. Then, for each year after that, you can bring them once a year for their annual checkup.

Pekinese are prone to certain health issues, such as:

  • Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease
  • Pyloric Syndrome
  • Entropion
  • Hernias
  • Cryptorchidism
  • Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
  • Eye Diseases
  • Heart Murmurs

However, with proper care, this doggo has an average lifespan of about 12 to 14 years. Tamiris…

Diet

With your vet’s approval, you can give your dog high-quality kibble or canned wet food from a commercial dog food brand. Or you can feed them a homemade dog food recipe. Just be sure to keep the food appropriate for their breed size, age, weight, and metabolism.

Grooming

Pekingese require a lot of grooming. You’ll want to bring them to a professional grooming salon at least once a month, if not more frequently. You’ll want to brush their fur at least once per day to keep shedding, tangles, and mats at bay. Also, keep up with trimming their nails, brushing their teeth, and cleaning their ears.
