Training a dog is one of the most rewarding aspects of their care. Pugs have unique training needs. Though they have a reputation of being difficult to train, you can work with their natural tendencies for successful obedience sessions. We’ve made a list of five pug training tips to help you get started.

How To Train Your Pug

Pugs, like most dogs, respond very well to positive reinforcement during training. Make sure to have healthy treats on hand, only offering them when your pug performs the desired behavior. Below are five pug training tips to make the process even easier.

1. Use A Focus Command

As a breed, pugs can get easily distracted during training. You can train them to focus on you, lengthening the amount of time they need to pay attention or watch you. Tap them on the nose, then point at yourself, with the command “watch.” Reward them with a treat when they look up at you.

2. Teach Them To Stay

You will need to wipe your pug’s face wrinkles and around their eyes daily. If you do not teach them to sit and stay, they may try to wiggle away from you during this process. Therefore, these commands are especially important to teach.

3. Use A Harness To Teach Them To Leave It

You don’t want your pug chewing up your favorite items. Keep them on a harness and leash, put something in front of them, and command them to “leave it.” Reward them when they follow your command. “Leave it” is a useful command for many pug situations.

4. Keep Your Training Climate-Controlled

Pugs have short muzzles, meaning they get overheated and overtired very easily. You should keep training sessions short so as not to overexert them. Don’t train in hot weather or extremely cold weather, either.

5. Work With Their Separation Anxiety

Most likely, your pug will want to be around you constantly. This is a breed which gets very attached to their owners. Unfortunately, many pugs develop separation anxiety if kept away from their owners for too long. You can set up a small area with everything they might need, training them to stay in it if you need to go out.
