You might not know what a Puginese is. That isn’t surprising, because the Puginese isn’t a purebred dog. It’s the informal name for a cross between the Pug and the Pekingese. Pugs have become very well-loved in recent years, making crossbreeding with other dogs soar, so the Puginese was a natural choice to pop up.
While these dogs are very cute, you should be careful if you’re specifically seeking a breeder out to get one. Bad breeders will sell mixed breed dogs more than purebred because they can get away with having no papers. The AKC only gives out papers for purebred dogs, which they use to their advantage. This also often means the breeder hasn’t done any health or DNA testing, you could end up with a huge vet bill down the line.
A Loyal Dog
If you do find a legitimate one, however, you’ll have a great friend for life. They’re very small and may have the flatter face of the Pug. That means they may suffer from some of the health issues the Pug does. This includes respiratory diseases and potential organ failure in high temperatures. Ask your vet for their advice and take care.
In terms of personality and temperament, you’ll have an independent and sensitive dog. That means you should take care while training, but if you want a dog who does fine when being left alone in the house, they’re a great choice.
