The Whippet is a purebred part of the hound group. They’re known for being playful, affectionate, and calm. Whippets are lightning fast and are believed to have been bred because they’re smaller than Greyhounds. Coal miners enjoyed dog sports and rabbit hunting in their spare time but didn’t have the space or time to keep Greyhounds appropriately exercised. Thus, the Whippet was created. Whippets are small to medium dogs, growing between 18 and 22 inches tall, with females being slightly smaller than males. In addition, they can weigh between 25 and 40 pounds. Also, they have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. They’re all-around friendly dogs. For instance, Whippets are affectionate with their family members, great with young children, and great with other dogs.
Given their watchdog tendencies, they might be wary of meeting strangers at first, but they’ll warm up to them. In addition, this pooch is easy to train and socialize. You can bring them to the dog park to help with that and curb their high energy levels. Whippets would do better in a bigger home with a fenced-in yard for them to stretch their legs and get the zoomies outside.
