Fascinating Yorkshire Terrier Facts

1. They’re Not Classified As Terriers

2. Workers Used Them As Rodent Control

Yorkshire terriers were primarily bred as rat-catching dogs. Workers took them into mines and textile mills in the North of England for pest control. Hunters also took them in their pockets, releasing them to go after hares, foxes, and badgers.

3. They Have Hair, Not Fur

A Yorkie’s glossy, silky coat is one of its distinguishing features. The hairs are more like human hairs than most dog fur. Therefore, they have unique and intensive grooming needs. Make sure to brush your Yorkshire terrier daily!

4. One Was A WWII Hero

Corporal Smoky, a tiny Yorkie, acted in many ways on behalf of the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater. She’s often called the first therapy dog, as she was the companion to many wounded WWII soldiers in hospital. Smoky also dragged a 60-meter communications cable through a tiny tunnel, helping construct an Air Force base in the Philippines.

5. They Were One Of The First Breeds Recognized By The AKC

In 1885, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Yorkshire terrier. It was one of the first breeds in a group which also included basset hounds, beagles, and bull terriers. Currently, the Yorkshire terrier is the 10th most popular dog breed on the AKC’s list of 197 recognized breeds.
