Yorkshire Terrier Grooming Tips: 5 Ways To Have Your Dog Looking Fabulous

Yorkshire terriers are easily recognized by their unique, silky-textured hair. However, their defining feature can lead to lots of tangles, mats, and difficulty grooming. Luckily, we have made a list of five Yorkshire terrier grooming tips. These will help you keep your Yorkie’s hair looking silky and fabulous with a few simple steps at home.
Grooming Your Yorkshire Terrier
Though you can learn how to give your Yorkie the right haircut at home, you may want to consult a professional groomer first. They should be able to give you tips on how to maintain your Yorkie’s unique style. Below are five more Yorkshire terrier grooming tips to help you get started.
1. Make Sure You Have The Right Tools
Since Yorkshire terriers have such a unique coat, you will want to make sure you have the right tools to take care of it. Most groomers recommend a pin brush and metal pin comb. You may want to invest in a double-sided comb with two different tooth sizes. This will help you comb through different hair lengths and textures.
2. Spritz Their Hair With Water Before Brushing
Do not brush your Yorkie’s hair when it is completely dry. This could lead to breaking of their fine hairs. Spritz your Yorkshire terrier down with water from a spray bottle before starting to comb. Alternatively, you could use a spray-in conditioner instead.
3. Brush Every Day
Whatever hairstyle you choose for your Yorkshire terrier, it is important to keep it smooth and tangle-free. Brushing will also keep dirt out of your Yorkie’s fur. Taking a few minutes to brush your Yorkie from head to toe every day will help to cut down on tangles and mats in their silky coats.
4. Work Through Tangles
If your Yorkie does get their fur tangled, gently work through these tangles or mats with your fingers or a mat comb. This is especially important before bath time. Mats around their feet, ears, and faces can easily get worse if not combed through.
5. Bathe Every Month
Yorkshire terriers will need a bath every month. Only use as much dog shampoo as you need. It tends to be super concentrated, and it’s not good to leave shampoo in any dog’s coat. Make sure to rinse their fur out twice to make sure there is no shampoo left.
